School Counseling Program
**The counseling office is located in the 1st grade hallway - Room 135. **
Guidance Lessons:
Guidance lessons will take place by teacher request and flexible scheduling. The counselors will also work with K-5 teachers to schedule times to review necessary Common Core Essential Standards.
Essential Standards
Consultation and Coordination:
The counselors are available for consultation with parents, teachers, and outside agencies in order to best meet the needs of the students at FVES. Parent consultations often focus on concerns at home or school. Teacher consultations usually involve behavioral or academic concerns, or the personal/social needs of the students. Mrs. Bush is currently the 504 Coordinator and School Improvement Chair. The counselors are willing to help with the development of a behavior plan and/or classroom interventions for struggling students.
Individual Counseling:
Individual sessions with the counselor are for a variety of reasons depending on the need of the child. The topics range from study skills to anger management. Each session lasts about 10-15 minutes depending on the age of the child. Appointment slips are located in all of the classrooms and outside the counseling office. Students can give the appointment slips to the teacher or put it in counseling "mailbox" located outside my classroom. Teachers can also refer students to the counselor.
Group Counseling:
Groups are offered to students of the same age who may benefit from similar topics. There are usually 2-6 students in each group and the group lasts about 4-6 weeks. Groups will meet at least one time per week during a time teachers feels works with the best with their schedule. Topics include new students, friendship, grief and loss, self-esteem, and separation/divorce.
Confidentiality:
School counselors have a high duty of confidentiality to students and parents.
"A student has the right to privacy and confidentiality when participating in counseling activities. School counselors recognize that a counseling relationship requires an atmosphere of trust and confidence between the student and the counselor. Confidentiality ensures that disclosures will not be divulged to others except when authorized by the student or when there is a clear and present danger to the student and/or to other persons”. ASCA
